Fren is developed by Andrii Emelianenko (“I”, “me”, “my”). This Privacy Policy explains what the Fren iOS application (“Fren”, “the app”) collects, how that information is used, and where it is processed.
Your Privacy at a Glance
Your journal stays on your device. I don’t store your memos, recordings, or journal entries on my servers. Your memos, recordings, and journal entries are only yours.
AI features send data to OpenAI. When you record a memo, the audio and text are sent to OpenAI for transcription and analysis.
I collect basic technical data. Device info, usage analytics (you can turn these off in Settings), subscription status, and crash reports. No personal content.
iCloud sync is between you and Apple. If you enable iCloud, Apple handles that data under its own privacy terms and encryption settings.
What Fren Does
Fren is a journaling app. You record short voice memos, which are transcribed and analyzed by AI to provide mood insights, tags, summaries, and personalized feedback. Your journal is stored on your device. The AI features work by sending your audio and text to OpenAI for processing.
Information I Collect
Data You Provide
Voice recordings. When you record a memo, the audio file is stored on your device. The recording is also sent to OpenAI’s Whisper API for transcription.
Memo content. Your transcribed text is sent to OpenAI’s API to generate mood analysis, tags, summaries, a title, and personalized feedback. The results are stored locally on your device.
Tags and edits. Any tags you create or edits you make to memos are stored locally on your device.
Feedback. If you send feedback through the app, I receive the message and any contact information you choose to include, such as an email address.
Data Collected Automatically
Device information. A device identifier (Apple’s vendor ID), device type, operating system version, app version, and build number. I use this for analytics and troubleshooting.
Usage analytics. Events about how the app is used (e.g., features used, screens viewed, recording duration). These help me improve Fren. You can turn off analytics in Settings.
Subscription status. A confirmation of your subscription status, stored on my server to manage premium access. I don’t receive your payment details from Apple.
Crash and diagnostic data. If the app crashes, diagnostic information is sent to Sentry so I can fix the problem. I configure Sentry to avoid collecting journal content, but technical details about app state may be included.
Data I Do Not Collect
I don’t require an account to use Fren.
I don’t collect your name, email address, or account credentials (unless you voluntarily provide your email in feedback).
I don’t store your memos, transcripts, or journal entries on my servers.
I don’t track you across other apps or websites.
I don’t sell or share your personal data with third parties for marketing.
How Your Data Is Stored
On your device. Memos, voice recordings, transcripts, mood data, tags, summaries, and feedback are stored locally using Apple’s SwiftData framework. I have no way to access this data.
iCloud sync (optional). If you have iCloud enabled, your data may sync across your Apple devices through CloudKit. Apple manages that data under its own privacy policy and encryption settings — the level of protection depends on your iCloud configuration. See Apple’s Privacy Policy.
User preferences. Settings like language, appearance, and notification preferences are stored locally on your device.
On my servers. Only technical and operational data: analytics events, subscription confirmation, app configuration, and feedback you submit. No memos, recordings, or journal content.
Third-Party Services
Fren uses the following third-party services:
OpenAI
Voice recordings are sent to OpenAI’s Whisper API for transcription. Transcribed text is sent to OpenAI’s API for analysis (mood, tags, summaries, feedback). I use OpenAI’s API with data usage settings that do not opt in to model training. For details on how OpenAI handles API data, see OpenAI’s API Data Usage Policies and Privacy Policy.
Sentry
Crash reports and error diagnostics are sent to Sentry for stability monitoring. I configure Sentry to avoid collecting journal content, but technical details about app state or device may be included. See Sentry’s Privacy Policy.
Apple (iCloud/CloudKit)
If iCloud is enabled, your memo data may sync through Apple’s CloudKit infrastructure. Apple manages that data under its own privacy and security systems. See Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Requests include your device identifier and basic device information (OS version, app version) for operational purposes. No memos, recordings, or journal content is sent to or stored on the backend.
Data Retention
Your memo data stays on your device (and in iCloud, if enabled) until you delete it. Server-side data like analytics and crash reports are kept as long as reasonably needed to run and improve the app. Third-party providers retain data according to their own policies.
International Transfers
Some of the service providers used by Fren may process data in countries other than the one where you live. When that happens, your data is handled under their own terms, privacy policies, and any safeguards they apply under applicable law.
Your Rights and Data Deletion
You can delete individual memos and tags directly in the app. To request deletion of any server-side data associated with your device, contact me at andrew@kodkod.me. I will process deletion requests within 30 days.
Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to request access, correction, or restriction of processing of your personal data.
You can also:
Delete the app to remove all locally stored data
Disable iCloud sync through your device’s Settings to prevent cloud storage
Manage iCloud data through Settings > Apple Account > iCloud
Children’s Privacy
Fren is not directed to children under 13, or the minimum digital consent age in your jurisdiction. I do not knowingly collect personal information from children in those age groups. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, contact me and I will work to delete it.
Security
I use reasonable measures to protect data, including HTTPS for network communication. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
Changes to This Policy
I may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If I do, I will update the “Effective Date” at the top of this page.
